Rick Price? Heaven knows!

More than 25 years after Heaven Knows topped the charts and turned Rick Price into a singing sensation, the song continues to resonate among generations of music lovers especially in this season of love.

For sure, it will make the audience feel romantic when Price sings it during his concerts in Cebu on Feb. 13 at the Waterfront Hotel & Casino, in Davao on Feb. 14 at the SMX Convention Center and in Manila on Feb. 15 at the New Frontier Theater. With Joey G and Jinky Vidal as Price’s co-performers, the Heaven Knows Phl Tour 2019 features hits from the ’80s, ’90s and 2000s.

Fans are familiar with Price’s journey. As a nine-year-old and the youngest member of his families’ band, music was his passion, with his dream set against the backdrop of country Queensland. It was in the ’90s when the self-taught artist secured his major recording contract with Sony Records and released his first studio album, Heaven Knows. Price is also known for other chart-topping hits such as Nothing Can Stop Us Now, Not A Day Goes By, Walk Away Renee, Where Is The Love and many others.

Funfare did an exclusive e-mail interview with Price.

Excerpts:

You were in the Philippines for the first time in 1992 to promote Heaven Knows. What do you remember from that visit 26 years ago?

“The fondest memory of that first visit was meeting all the lovely people of the Philippines and being so happy that my song Heaven Knows had touched so many hearts.”

Tell us the story behind Heaven Knows. How do you feel every time you sing it all these years?

“Heaven Knows is a true story. It was written after a break-up. A lot of people identify with that story. The blessing is that the song has touched so many people and I still enjoy singing it today for that reason. The song has a life of its own.”

What about your other hits Nothing Can Stop Us Now and Where is the Love? What and who was your inspiration for these songs?

“Nothing Can Stop Us Now was written with two other writers. And I love that it’s a positive and uplifting love song about the celebration of being loved and in love. In some ways, it’s the antithesis of Heaven Knows.

“Where is The Love was always a favorite song of mine. Originally recorded by Donny Hathaway and Roberta Flack, it was such a privilege to record my version with Margaret Urlich, a wonderful singer from New Zealand.”

You are doing concerts in Manila with Filipino artists Joey G and Jinky Vidal. What do you know about them and their songs?

“I’ve always loved performing with other singers. Both Joey and Jinky have beautiful voices so I’m very much looking forward to sharing the stage with them.”

Have you ever performed with other Filipino artists?

“No, I believe this will be my first time. I’m excited!”

How do you usually spend Valentine’s?

“In the past, I have spent Valentine’s Day with my wife but sometimes I have a performance, so I get to spend it with my audience!”

Did you sing to your wife to win her heart?

“Yes. I wrote two songs for her. When I Fell For You and You Changed The Shape of My Heart.”

Any favorite love song (maybe your all-time favorite)?

“Love Me Tender.” 

If you were to serenade the audience during your Manila concert, what song would it be?

“Heaven Knows.”

Are you going to do duet with either Joey G or Jinky, or both (have you learned any Filipino song)?

“Yes, I will be performing a duet with both of them.”
