MANILA, Philippines — Kapamilya veteran singer Gary Valenciano revealed that he suffered post-surgery depression after his two surgeries last June.

At the sidelines of Ayala Mall’s “Awit at Laro” project launch that celebrates culture and music, Gary V told the media that he really went through “a lot of challenges.”

“I even went through post surgery depression. It was tough because it wasn’t just one surgery, it was two. So I have to deal with that and the realization that I’m really just human after all. Even people call me Mr. Pure Energy, it’s a deception to think that nothing wrong will happen to me,” Gary V said.

Nonetheless, with the help of friends and family, he overcame the depression in two weeks. Now, the veteran singer said he is okay.

“I’m doing better. I feel great. I’m not yet exactly where I need to be, but I’m okay because it keeps me aware on where I’m at,” he said.

Apart from proper nutrition, Garv V said he is now back in the gym and biking and dancing again.

“It’s more on my diet. Keep away from masyadong maalat na food and all. The doctor said if I’m able to continue doing what I did before, which was to workout, proper diet, he says I have to continue doing that, so that’s what I’m doing. I’m back in the gym, I’m biking again, I’m dancing again, and it feels good,” he said.

“Mas na-emphasize ngayon sa career ko the need to rest. Hold on, there’s tomorrow. I have to take care of myself. If I want to last longer, I need to step back a bit and be careful on what I do,” he added.

“Mr. Pure Energy” is back in the limelight today as he leads Ayala Malls’ hosting of “Awit at Laro,” a project that celebrates music and culture by reintroducing traditional Filipino games to a new generation of youth through music and the arts.

The project, the brainchild of Gary and Bambi Mañosa, aims to raise funds for the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the Tukod Foundation and the Shining Light Foundation.

The “Awit at Laro” album features 10 traditional songs and 10 brand new songs about Filipino games. There will also be an “Awit at Laro” concert, which will tour 21 malls throughout the country during Christmas season, spreading the joy of music across the Philippines.

Directed by Paolo Valenciano, the tour will feature Gary, Steps Dance Studio and artists from the album, including Kiana Valenciano, Jona, Katrina Velarde, Darren Espanto, Lara Maigue, Yeng Constantino, Joey Ayala, RJ Dela Fuente, AC Bonifacio, Daryll Ong, and Janella Salvador. The shows will begin on November 3 and will run until December 22 at Ayala Malls across the country.
