Sophie steps out of her shell

MANILA, Philippines — Sophie Albert revealed that she initially felt the pressure playing her first major role as the wild child Amber Roces in the newest Kapuso primetime series Pamilya Roces premiering on Monday, Oct. 8.

In the past, Sophie was identified with drama roles in the Kapatid network that’s why she admitted that it was at first strange to do a wild, funny character. However, she wanted to prove to herself that she could pull it off and she was challenged to step out of her shell.

“I didn’t expect that I would do (this kind of) character. I sometimes hate myself that I’m a shy type of person, soft-spoken and very quiet. I’m more of an overthinker and a loner (laughs). Nakakahiya pero ganun akong tao. I just like being alone… reading books. But I’m proud that for a while lang medyo nagiging baklita din ako and I’m learning from my character. Parang yung mga tao sa set, they said, ‘Si Sophie ba yan o si Amber?’ kasi parang nagiging madaldal na ako. They said nauuwi ko na yung character ko. So, it’s good at least I’m coming out of my shell slowly because of being Amber,” Sophie told The STAR during the mediacon held recently at the Prime Hotel in Quezon City.

Sophie’s Amber is her most daring role yet because it requires her to do passionate kissing scenes with co-star Rocco Nacino’s Hugo Javellana. Amber plays the daughter of Violet Balocboc (Elizabeth Oropesa), who had a one-night stand with Rodolfo (Roi Vinzon). The latter is already married to Natalia (Gloria Diaz), who bore him two daughters, Crystal (Carla Abellana) and Jade (Gabbi Garcia).

As an illegitimate daughter, Amber wants to get a larger share of Rodolfo’s wealth. She is the main contravida in the life of her stepsisters including Pearl and Amethyst, played by Jasmine Curtis-Smith and Shaira Diaz.

When she saw herself in the Pamilya Roces teaser, Sophie related, “I’m glad that I just (went with it) because I felt proud for myself that somewhat nagagawa ko naman yung character and it’s a fulfillment for me. I was like ‘wow, nakaka-proud!’ I finally have a show in GMA and yung role, it’s very different. It’s something that I can be proud of for a very long time.”

She added, “In the beginning, nangangapa ako but eventually since three times a week ko siyang ginagawa, slowly parang easy na lang siya. And it helped that I also do workshops with GMA so even before I got this role, I think they prepared me well to be able to do characters like this. It also helped that Tita Elizabeth was there to guide and encourage me. I’ve worked with her before so I feel comfortable with her. She’s just like my mom and she’s also my inspiration.”

Directed by Joel Lamangan, Pamilya Roces showcases different perspectives of a family that viewers will find amusing. More importantly, they will witness relatable scenes that will tug at their heartstrings and endear them to the characters.

The powerhouse cast also stars Snooky Serna, Ana Roces, Andre Paras, Christian Bautista, Mika dela Cruz and Manolo Pedrosa.
