Anthony Vincent Bova is a mentor known for adapting the Eric Morris System of Acting — one of the most effective and most credible methods that actors use for their craft. Carrying the technique, Bova is keen on leaving a mark on his students not only by helping them hone their skills as artists, but to get to know their innermost passions as well.

The New York-based instructor paid his second visit to the Philippines to challenge his GMA Artist Center students and provide a safe space where they can fail while still feeling encouraged to elevate their standard in acting.

“It is vital for an artist to truly understand and have a dependable toolkit. Working as an artist doesn’t mean you have a dependable toolkit; it just means you’re being employed, and that’s a good thing. But it doesn’t necessarily mean you have a high level of artistry in your work,” Bova said.

The acting coach then catered to the most important cores of an actor, “This year, I focused on different parts of the actor’s life, different tools and techniques, and many different ways to apply those tools and techniques. The first workshop was just a fraction of that.”

Bova’s co-teacher Ana Feleo added, “I believe that actors, especially the new ones, should take acting classes regularly. They should find the right teacher that will make them feel that they are safe, encouraged and not scared to fail or make mistakes.”

The Kapuso artists who attended the workshop are Mike Tan, Migo Adecer, James Teng, Klea Pineda, Jay Arcilla, Dave Bornea, Yasser Marta, Nicole Donessa, Janine Gutierrez, Sanya Lopez, Martin del Rosario, Ashley Ortega, Bruno Gabriel, Mikee Quintos, Gil Cuerva, Ruru Madrid, Mikoy Morales, Liezel Lopez, Addy Raj, Joyce Ching, Thea Tolentino, Miguel Tanfelix, Bianca Umali, Andrea Torres, Lindsay de Vera, Ben Alves, Chynna Ortaleza, Rocco Nacino, Kristoffer Martin and Alden Richards.

Alden, a first-timer to Bova’s style of teaching, shared that his experience made him set a new goal as an actor: To win an international acting award. Through the workshop, he also realized that there’ll always be something new he can learn, “Naiba po ang tingin ko sa workshop. Konti lang pala ang alam ko about acting, at may mas malalim pa palang paghuhugutan as an actor,” he shared.

Carrying the Eric Morris System of Acting, Anthony Vincent Bova leaves a mark on his students

The Kapuso star recently went to the US to accept the New York Festivals Silver Award for Alaala: A Martial Law Special in which he starred as Boni Ilagan. He took this opportunity to act on his new goal and went to Bova’s school in New York to have a one-on-one workshop.

Meanwhile, Janine Gutierrez shared that “the workshop did more than just teach about the craft,” it also touched her innermost emotions. “I got to know myself more, so it really helped me rediscover myself,” she said.

Kristoffer Martin felt that the intensity of the workshop was needed to imbibe the method, “Ang hirap, pero masarap gawin. The thing about the Bova workshop is that he makes it personal for you can focus on your own emotions, para mas personal yung atake mo sa role.”

GMA Artist Center has tasked Bova and Feleo to come up with a long-term program to train and supervise more thoroughly the education and growth of artists from its talent pool. They are now working together to establish the safe space where actors can feel that mistakes are not failures, but doors to different opportunities.

With these takeaways from the workshop, the Kapuso artists are treading in a path where success is centered on talent, but anchored by humility and hard work.
