MTV invades TV and streaming

MTV invades TV and streaming
Beauty and the Beast is nominated as Movie of the Year at the MTV Movie Awards

Times are indeed a-changing. It was a surprise when MTV put up its own annual Movie Awards. People wondered what a music channel initially concerned only with music videos had to do with motion pictures. But the MTV Movie Awards turned out to be young and hip with fun categories like Best Kiss or Best Villain. So, nobody from the old guard section of movie award-givers raised any objection.

Now, having probably realized that it was becoming also old guard itself, the MTV Movie Awards decided to do a revamp this year. No need for fans to worry because Best Kiss and Best Villain are still categories, but there are changes like having non-gendered acting nominees. No Best Actor or Actress anymore. Just Best Actor for both. There are also new ones like Best Documentary.

The biggest change though is the fact that from now on the MTV Movie Awards will not be simply Movie Awards anymore. Now included are accomplishments on television and hold your breaths, from streaming sites. I think that MTV made a big step forward with this decision, which is so right.

Whether we watch those moving images on big screens at the theater, on TV sets at home or on your PC, laptop, mobile phone, etc., etc., they are all basically motion pictures or movies. Besides, it is a fact that because they do not have to entice moviegoers into the theaters, producers for television and streaming sites are more daring in their choice of materials and execution. And everybody can enjoy those for a very small fee wherever and whenever they are.

And so for the first time in 20 years, an actor like Allison Williams, a Best Villain nominee from the movie Get Out is in competition with Demogorgon of Stranger Things from Netflix; Jared Leto of Suicide Squad; Jeffrey Dean Morgan of The Walking Dead; and Wes Bentley of American Horror Story. I tell you the movies are in grave danger at the MTV Movie Awards this year.

You can watch the live telecast from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on MTV on May 8.
