Godspell: A rock musical in a time of change

Amadís Ma. Guerrero - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines – Inspired by the Gospel of Matthew, Godspell, a rock musical by Stephen Schwartz and John-Michael Tebelak, made its debut in 1971, won many awards and became an international hit because of its captivating music (remember Day by Day?). It was shown once in Manila many years ago, and now the good news is that it will be brought back here in a new production by MusicArtes to be directed by Anton Juan.

This was announced in a recent press conference in Makati City. The cast is led by Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo, with Jef Flores as Jesus and OJ Mariano as Judas. A strong supporting cast includes Red Concepcion, Caisa Borromeo, Topper Fabregas and Sheila Valderrama.

The show will run for two weekends starting June 17 at the Romulo Auditorium of RCBC Plaza, Makati, with 8 p.m. and 3 p.m. performances (e-mail [email protected]). The press launch was enlivened by rousing production numbers from the cast.

The story is propelled by a group of young singing actors narrating the parables of the Lord Jesus using games, storytelling techniques and a dash of humor.

“There will be a haunting Crucifixion scene,” declared Anton. “I will not say anything more.”

The director mused: “Now, do I deal with a musical play that has to do with a social problem? It is a time for change; it is a time for Godspell. It is a play within a play; God is omnipresent, not just in plays. Never forget that the Catholic Church and all Christianity is about social justice.”

He added: “This is a musical for our times. The songs teach us to have a vision of ourselves, to build the City of God and the City of Man.”

I asked how Godspell would compare with another rock opera, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Anton replied: “There is a great difference. Jesus Christ Superstar played on the passion and death of Jesus while Godspell has a vision of humanity.”
