‘Burlesk’ theaters of the ’50s & ’60s
Chelo ‘The Cuban Spitfire.’ From Mexico Gloria Padilla ‘The Human Dynamo.’ Akiko Shinju ‘Japanese B Girl.’
‘The Nylon Girls.’ Such were the come-on of the ‘burlesk’ theaters of the ’50s and ’60s, located in Manila’s Sta. Cruz and Binondo districts.
‘Burlesk’ is the Tagalog word for burlesque, which is really more comic than erotic. But then ‘burlesk’ was — still is — associated with striptease.
Those ‘burlesk’ theaters included Astor, Inday and King’s.
‘Packaged’ with those striptease shows were third-run movies and comic skits featuring the likes of Bayani, Teroy, Balut and Chinita.
If there was a really sexy film, like The Devil’s Sleep, Astor exhibited them solo, minus the sexy belles.
Gone are those ‘burlesk’ days to the relief of so-called moral crusaders. — RKC
