Juvenile justice in Phl
MANILA, Philippines - Children in jail continue to be a significant problem in the Philippines. There are no easy solutions to the problem, especially when the crimes committed are in connivance with their parents or guardians.
More than 50,000 children in the Philippines have been arrested and detained. Most of them are charged with minor crimes like petty theft, sniffing solvents and vagrancy. Some face more serious cases, those that merit a 12-year detention at the Intensive Juvenile Intervention and Support Center.
Minors are not exempted from the law, and Republic Act No. 9344 is vital in covering the different stages involving children at risk and children in conflict with the law — from prevention to rehabilitation and reintegration.
How does the government handle cases for minors? What can parents and guardians do for these children?
