Close to their mothers

DIRECT LINE - Boy Abunda - The Philippine Star

The 86th Academy Awards is considered to be the most prestigious award-giving body that recognizes sterling achievements in American cinema, but for some Hollywood actors, the Oscars serves as bonding time with their beloved mothers who they choose as their special dates. In the recent Oscars, the following actors brought along their mothers to the awards ceremony.

Matthew McConaughey — In his speech after winning the Best Actor trophy (Dallas Buyers Club), Matthew revealed that he has three important things in order to survive: God, his family and someone to look up to as a hero. He thanked his mother Mary Kathleen McCabe who was with him during the ceremony. “To my mother who’s here tonight, who taught me and my two older brothers… demanded that we respect ourselves… and what we in turn learned was that we were better able to respect others. Thank you for that, Mama.”

Jared Leto — Here’s another reason to love Jared aside from his brilliant performances. The Best Supporting Actor winner who played Rayon in Dallas Buyers Club gave an emotional acceptance speech onstage. He thanked his mother Constance who hugged him when his name was announced as the winner.

Jared brought his beautiful mom to the Oscars and posed together at the red carpet. “In 1971, Bossier City, Louisiana, there was a teenage girl who was pregnant with her second child. She was a high school drop-out and a single mom, but somehow she managed to make a better life for herself and her children. She encouraged her kids to be creative, to work hard and to do something special. That girl is my mother and she’s here tonight,” he said onstage. “And I just want to say, I love you, Mom. Thank you for teaching me to dream.”

Lupita Nyong’o — Like mother, like daughter. The Best Supporting actress and her mom Dorothy were spotted together at the Oscars. Lupita took her mom to the seventh Annual Women in Film Pre-Oscar Cocktail Party at Fig & Olive in West Hollywood. The proud mom was also seen hanging out with her daughter in many award-giving bodies such as the Independent Spirit Awards.

Leonardo DiCaprio — This guy doesn’t mind at all if he is tagged as a mama’s boy. Leonardo (who was nominated as Best Actor for his role in The Wolf of Wall Street) and his mom Irmelin Indenbirken posed together on the red carpet and sat beside each other during the Oscars. They were spotted together while attending the 2014 Vanity Fair Oscar Party hosted by Graydon Carter held during the 2014 Oscars last March 2 in West Hollywood, California. The mother and son are frequently seen together. Last January, Leonardo walked on the red carpet with his mother who was also his escort to the Golden Globe Awards.

Leonardo and his mom are very close. It is said that Leonardo got his name because he kicked at her womb while she was looking at a Leonardo da Vinci painting in a museum in Italy when she was pregnant. His parents divorced when he was one-year-old and he lived mostly with his mother. They resided in several Los Angeles neighborhoods while his mother worked at various jobs to support them.

Jonah Hill — He brought along his mom Sharon Lyn Chalkin as his Oscars date. Jonah was nominated as Best Supporting Actor for his role in The Wolf of Wall Street. Jonah reportedly chortled to ABC, “She’s flirting with Bradley (Cooper), Channing (Tatum) and everybody. It’s kind of a disaster!”

Michael Fassbender — The actor walked the red carpet with his mother Adele. Although Michael did not bring home the golden statue, he had a great time attending the Oscars with his mother.

As we say in our fledgling foundation, Make Your Nanay Proud, with maternal love, everything is possible.
