TV star Wentworth Miller comes out as a gay man

Chuck Smith - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Actor Wentworth Miller, who is best known for his role in the U.S. television show “Prison Break,” revealed that he is gay.

According to the report published in People.com, Wentworth came out as gay in an open letter declining an invitation to attend the St. Petersburg International Film Festival in Russia.

The open letter was published on the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation website.

“Thank you for your kind invitation. As someone who has enjoyed visiting Russia in the past and can also claim a degree of Russian ancestry, it would make me happy to say yes,” Wentworth wrote. “However, as a gay man, I must decline.”

He added, “I am deeply troubled by the current attitude toward and treatment of gay men and women by the Russian government.”

“The situation is in no way acceptable, and I cannot in good conscience participate in a celebratory occasion hosted by a country where people like myself are being systematically denied their basic right to live and love openly.”

“Perhaps, when and if circumstances improve, I'll be free to make a different choice."

The letter is in light of the recent anti-gay law signed by Russian president Vladimir Putin.

Wentworth’s TV show “Prison Break” ran from 2005 to 2009. He also wrote and co-produced the 2013 thriller film “Stoker,” which starred Nicole Kidman and was directed by Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook.
