Jasmine juggles showbiz & school

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Jasmine Curtis-Smith is now making Manila her home base perhaps for the next four years. The showbiz-landia had seen the Kapatid star flying in from and flying out to Australia for the past two years. She was then dead set to finish high school down under and to fulfill showbiz commitments up here.

This time around, the Kapatid star mixes showbiz and school with more ease. Jasmine is acting alongside Derek Ramsay on TV5’s Undercover and studying communication arts at the Ateneo de Manila University.

Also keeping her hands full are Jasmine’s endorsements for brands like Flawless, which encourage youngsters like her to learn the ropes of business — and “to make business their pleasure.”

“I encourage the youth,” says Jasmine. “If you have enough knowledge and enough confidence that you can make it, why not? The earlier you begin a business, the earlier you have earnings; the earlier you can purchase investments.”

Jasmine now owns a car and a condo unit that, “I’m now paying for.” Her financial independence comes from following the desire of her heart, which is doing showbiz, and saving for the rainy days.

“I would love to have my own franchise,” replies Jasmine when asked about the possibility of acquiring a Flawless branch. “I have friends who started their businesses at 19. Now their stores are doing so well. From them pa lang, it is already an inspiration. Why not (put up my own business in the future)?” Interested parties, who wish to become part of the growing Flawless family, will be supported from Day One. They will get special training, marketing and sales support and assistance in finding the ideal location. The skin-care and beauty company has 35 clinics nationwide and is manned by well-trained and skin doctors and professionals.

Celebrities Lorna Tolentino, Divine Lee and Maxene Magalona endorse the brand and are one in saying that “Beauty is a flawless investment.”

Meantime, Jasmine will take it easy and slow before “I can get another investment.”

On weekdays, Jasmine is busy attending class lectures in Ateneo from 7:30 a.m. till afternoon. “After school hours, I go straight to taping or photo shoot or whatever it is they have planned for me.”

Tuesdays and Thursdays are devoted to Jasmine’s homework and group work. She meets her classmates to catch up on school requirements. Hands down, Jasmine’s schedule off- and onscreen is hectic.

“I’m getting used to it,” Jasmine says. “Of course, when I have work, nakakapagod pa rin but okey lang.”

What does she intend to specialize in when she reaches her sophomore year?

“I’m hoping to major in advertising next year,” answers Jasmine. “It’s different. Since I’m doing (TV acting), I’m learning it first-hand. It’s redundant if I do that in school, too. I want to learn something else. I want to learn (another) aspect (of advertising). I will learn (more about) my endorsements. If they talk to me, I’m into the jargons they use.”

For sure, working behind the scenes will get Jasmine excited like coming up with a campaign for clients, writing copies for ads and preparing storyboards for TV commercials. She will understand more the medium and discover interesting things about the audience.

Based on the way Jasmine looks these days, one cannot deny that certain glow and happiness, coming from within. Showbiz insiders point it to love.

“I’m a happy person,” she says. “I’m just a happy person…  What you see is what you get.”
