Her first time is Empress-ive

KAPAMILYA DAY - Kane Errol Choa - The Philippine Star

Empress is not in a hurry to grow up.

After doing commercials at age seven, the 20-year-old actress has smoothly transitioned from being a kiddie cast member in Ang TV 2 to playing teenybopper characters in Your Song, headlining her launching drama series Rosalka and starring in the top-rating primetime teleserye Huwag Ka Lang Mawawala.

Now, she has stretched herself by doing her first on-screen kiss and going even more daring than ever before in the movie Tuhog after posing for a men’s magazine.

With piles of proof that she is willing to shed her child star image to take on more mature roles, there is no doubt Empress is ready to tread a new chapter in her career.

In this interview, Empress shares her thoughts on growing up in showbiz, dealing with her busy schedule, and being tagged as one of the sexiest women in the country.

If you were to choose, which of the three main characters in Tuhog should live — the unhappy Fiesta who was pregnant, the retired Tonio who was pursuing his childhood dream, or the young Caloy pursuing his love?

“Caloy. He was the youngest and he had to fulfill his mission in life.”

In the movie, you did some naughty scenes that you have not done before, including your first kissing scene.

“Viewers have definitely not seen me playing naughty in the movies or TV. It was actually my first time to do some intimate and kissing scenes.”

Was it a deliberate plan to be more daring after posing for a men’s magazine?

“I think I am at the right age to try exploring new roles. As an actress, I also need to grow and offer something new to the public. So far, things have turned out well and I am happy about it. Some people appreciate me now more than they did before and it feels great. I get negative and positive reviews, but of course, I can’t please everybody.”

How do you feel that you recently made it to the Top 10 sexiest women list of a popular men’s magazine?

“I was surprised and happy. I am touched that people appreciate this other side of me.”

How was your experience walking the ramp at the Top 10 sexiest women event?

“It was an amazing experience. I never thought I would be able to do it or even make it to the list. I had fun, felt sexy and enjoyed the moment.”

What is your regimen to keep yourself in shape?

“I work out at least three times a week. I eat what I want, but only in small amounts.”

Is it true that your co-star Joseph Marco in Huwag Ka Lang Mawawala is your special someone?

“I like that he is funny and open-minded. Let’s just say that he is the reason behind my smile.”

You’ve been in the business for 13 years, was there a time that you wanted to give up?

“Yes. I thought I would not be given a break. But I believed in myself and my talent until I was noticed. My manager Becky Aguila believed in me and boosted my confidence. Then, Rosalka happened and ABS-CBN launched me as the ‘empress’ of drama.”

What’s next for a girl who literally grew up and lived in the world of showbiz?

“I want more mature and challenging roles that will show my versatility as an actress. I also love music, so if it’s possible, I would like to give it a try. Anyway, nothing is impossible.”
