Sexy Talk with Sid Lucero

Sid Lucero is in a class by himself.

His passion for his craft is all-consuming. His pursuit of realism is seamless. There’s no taboo for him; it’s all or nothing at all. He does whatever the role calls for, strip to his birthday suit if necessary (all in a day’s work) or kiss not just another guy but three of them in Muli, one of his memorable indie starrers, in which he played a gay character consumed by his love for his married lover (played by Cogie Domingo). “It’s his most daring so far,” said his manager Ricky Gallardo, “although his most steamy love scene was with Ara Mina in Selda.”

Daring and winning. For Selda (where, as inmates, he and Emilio Garcia did a torrid love scene), Sid won Best Actor at the Thessaloniki International Film Festival, Urian Awards and Gawad Tanglaw; for Muli, Best Actor also in the Urian Awards and the Golden Screen Awards; and for Tambolista, Best Actor in Cinema One Awards.

He could have capitalized on his forebears’ famous surnames (Gil and de Mesa) but he opted to use the name of the character played by his father, Mark Gil, in the 1981 Mike de Leon searing drama Batch ’81 (unforgettable for, among other scenes, its detailed depiction of hazing).

“But I can’t be as daring in television,” qualified Sid who’s in the cast of the GMA afternoon soap Hindi Ka Na Mag-Iisa.

Up next are two movie projects, Death March directed by Adolf Alix Jr. from the Palanca grand-winner screenplay of Rody Vera and El Presidente, official entry in this year’s Metro Manila Filmfest directed by Tikoy Aguiluz for Laguna Gov. ER Ejercito’s company.
