Long live the MET

MANILA, Philippines - The Metropolitan Theater, also known as the “Grand Dame” of theaters, designed in 1931 by National Artist for Architecture Juan Arellano, finally reopened its doors last June 23.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo led the unveiling of the marker and reopening of the newly-restored MET. Those who witnessed the event were Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim, Manila Historical and Heritage Commission vice chairperson Gemma Cruz-Araneta, National Commission on Culture and the Arts Executive Director Cecille Guidote-Alvarez, Joel Cruz and German “Kuya Germs” Moreno. Kuya Germs is the man behind the fund-raising project which seeks the full restoration of the theater.

The performers were Pilita Corrales, Regine Velasquez, Jaya, Christian Bautista, La Diva, Marissa Sanchez, The Company, Kris Lawrence, Gian Magdangal, Bo Cerrudo, The Manila Symphony Orchestra, Douglas Nierras‘ Power Dance and The Club Mwah Follies. Kuya Germs with John Nite and Sharmaine Santiago acted as the event’s hosts.
