Lucy: Living the sweet life

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Dreams do come true. Lucy Torres-Gomez can attest to this cliché when she married Richard Gomez, the man of her dreams.

“I remember praying (to God) that he (Richard) will be my husband,” recalls the host of Q-11’s The Sweet Life at the taping of her birthday episode. “(Now,) I don’t have to pinch myself (that) it’s true.”

What a sweet life it is for Lucy whose simple, innocent wish was granted. Other surprises, like hosting her daily, lifestyle show and dance program came after that.

“I think having a sweet life is really a decision,” says Lucy. “It’s like happiness. You make a choice to be happy no matter what. Life is like a wheel. You’ll never be happy forever. You’ll never be sad forever. It’s part of how imperfect the world is.”

Although her hands are full these days, Lucy never forgets the roles that truly matter to her: Being a doting mom to Juliana and loving wife to Richard.

“I know no other role,” replies Lucy when asked if she enjoys being always behind Richard. “As a wife, I know that my place is with my husband. Where my husband goes, I go. That’s how simple it is. It has simplified life for me. I know what to do as his wife. I believe in my husband. I’ll just do what feels right.”

Expect Lucy to be in the frontlines, cheering Richard during political sorties come 2010. Richard will run as representative of Ormoc City, where Lucy hails from. This is not the first time we see the couple in the campaign trail. Richard tried his luck for a senatorial seat in 2007.

Meantime, Lucy will keep herself busy doing TV work and managing her home.

“Nothing special,” says Lucy of her birthday on Dec. 11. “Sure if I had my way, I wish I was 18, but knowing what I already know now. There’s a kind of wisdom that comes only with age. I like where I am now in my life. I feel I know myself better. That only comes with aging. You will come to that stage, where I am now, that you know what you want and you don’t apologize for what you want.”

Lucy has surpassed that phase in life when she had little doubts about her decisions. She is comfortable with her personal and professional life. Lucy has a long, long way to go as far as her showbiz career is concerned.

For the special episode today, Lucy and co-host Wilma Doesnt have Dawn Zulueta as guest. Dawn will ask a series of questions.

During the shoot, Lucy shares that real beauty comes from within. Outer beauty is not the be-all and end-all of a woman. There’s more to life than staying beautiful. A woman should live with a purpose and meaning.

Lucy says that she has made the right decision of marrying a handsome husband. Since you like the person, you won’t get impatient or you are not tempted to push him aside. (Physical) attraction is part of liking and eventually loving another person.

At the end of the day, Lucy is happy that the industry she never expected to be part of has been generous and grateful to Richard and her.

Asked what’s her birthday wish, Lucy answers, “If I had one wish, it would be for a baby boy.”
