CEBU, Philippines — For the second straight year, the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters suffered a heartbreaker when they lost to the University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers in the Finals of the recently concluded 23rd Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) basketball season.

The Webmasters, who last won a crown way back in 2011, moved on the brink of ending their 12-year title drought after stunning the previously undefeated Lancers in the series opener. 66-63.

But the Lancers swept next two games of the series capped by a decisive 60-41 victory in the deciding Game 3 last December 16 to extinguish UC's championship dreams again.

"We weren't just lucky to sustain games 2 and 3," said UC head coach Atty. Kernn Sesante. "Maybe next year hopefully we can win the title because most members of our team will be intact."

Still, Sesante felt proud and happy for what the Webmasters have achieved in their two-month campaign where they carved a good number of records for the UC community.

They kick-started their campaign with a 74-point massacre of the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) Wildcats, 109-35, to set a mark for the most lopsided win in the college division in the league's 23-year history.

That became their launching pad to an amazing 8-0 streak, their best ever start since the inception of CESAFI in 2000.

Lastly, the Webmasters take pride for being the only team to beat the eventual champion Lancers this season.

"It was a fun and memorable season. We had a great time during the eliminations and the semifinals. It was worth it especially when we stopped UV's winning streak during the finals," said Sesante.

"I'm very happy for the guys for making this a very memorable season for giving their best. We just hope we can continue this momentum," Sesante added. "We take this defeat as our source of motivation to become better for next season."
