London marathon
Kelvin Kiptum of Kenya surged after the 30-kilometer mark to break this year’s London Marathon open, in 2:01:25. It was the second fastest marathon behind Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge’s world record of 2:01:09 set at the Berlin Marathon in 2019. Kiptum’s time was 16 seconds off Kipchoge’s record. Geoffrey Kamworor was second in 2:04:23 while Tamirat Tola of Ethiopia came in third in 2:04:59. Leul Gebresilase also of Ethiopia, finished fourth in 2:05:45 while Seifu Tura wound up fifth in 2:06:38. The rest of the top ten in the men’s division are
6th, Emile Cairess of (Great Britain-2:08:07), 7th Brett Robinsons (Australia 2:10:19), 8th Phi Seseman (Great Britain -2:10:23) 9th Olympic champion Mo Farah (Great Britain- 2:10:28) and 10th, Chris Thompson (Great Britain2:11:50). Seeded runners, Kenenisa Bekele and former champion Amos Kipruto, did not finish (DNF).
Sifan Hassan wins
In the women’s race, the Netherland’s Sifan Hassan sprinted to the finish line in 2:18:33. It was her first time to run a marathon and upset the heavy favorites led by Olympic champion Peres Jepchirchir of Kenya and Alemo Megerutu of Ethiopia. Megerutu timed 2:18:37 to pocket second place while Jepchirchir was third in 2:18:38. World record holder Brigid Kosgei of Kenya, pulled out after the start of the race. Ethiopia- born Hassan, won the 5,000m and 10,000m events in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics while also winning the bronze in the 1,500m. She also won the 5,000m and 10,000m in the World Championship. Sheila Chepkirui of Kenya settled for fourth in 2:18:54 with Yalemzerf Yehaulan of Ethiopia, placing fifth in 2:18:53. The rest of the top ten:

8TH- Tadu Teshome (Ethiopia-2:21:31)
9th- Sofia Yaremchuk ( Italy- 2:24:02) and

Bigger Ovation
In 1974, Elvis received a bigger ovation than the teams on the opening game of the newly-formed World Football League in Memphis, Tenn., pitting the Memphis Grizzlies (not the basketball team) against the Portland Storms.
