2 Cebuano weightlifters to compete in World Championships

Caecent No-ot Magsumbol - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — Top Cebuano lifters Elreen Anne Ando and John Febuar Ceniza will be seeing action in the World Weightlifting Championships slated on September 18-27 in Pattaya, Thailand.

This will be the second time for Ando to compete in the world stage and the first time for Ceniza.

National coach Ramon Solis, a former Olympian, said Ando will be fielded in the women’s 64 kgs. division and Ceniza in the men’s 55 kgs. class.

Aside from Ceniza and Ando, the Samahang Weightlifting ng Pilipinas led by Monico Puentevella is sending eight other bets top the 10-day tilt including Rio Olympics silver medallist Hidilyn Diaz and her cousin Mary Flor, Elien Rose Perez, Margareth and Nestor Colonia, Kristnel Macrohon, Dave Lloyd Pacaldo, and Jeffrey Garcia.

The country’s athletes in the World Championships are the same lifters that will be representing the country in the weightlifting event of the 30th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games set later this year at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium in Manila.

Aside from gauging the national lifters’ chances in the SEAG, the upcoming battle in Thailand is also a qualifier for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
