SHS-Ateneo trips Don Bosco in OT

Rico Navarro - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines —  Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu squeezed out a come-from-behind 40-37 overtime win over Don Bosco Technical College Cebu in the semifinals of the SBP division of the SBP Passerelle Twin Tournament backed by Milo at the Sacred Heart School Mango Avenue campus gym yesterday.

Down 7-13 and 15-25 after the first two periods, the Magis Eagles slowly but surely clawed their way back into the game in the second half. They narrowed the lead down to three, 25-28, at the end of the third period behind the six third period points of Kyean Gubat.

They sustained their momentum in the fourth period with Keenan Rasmo drilling two successive triples to give SHS-Ateneo its first taste of the lead at 35-31. But Don Bosco battled back to tie the game on a triple and a free throw by AJ Prudenciado to send the game into overtime with 52 seconds left in the game. Neither side scored from that point. Henry Kristoffer Suico broke the silent start of both sides in overtime with a nifty up and under lay-up to lead a 5-0 run for the wards of Coach Gigi Catolico.

Ben Ong added a free throw while Gubat scored on an undergoal stab from a Rasmo drop pass for a 40-35 lead with 1:36 left. Escobido scored Don Bosco’s only field goal in overtime with 40 ticks left for the final tally. Gubat led SHS-Ateneo with 12 points while Rasmo added eight. Escobido had nine for DBTC as Christian Longakit had eight. SHS-Ateneo faces the undefeated University of the Visayas for the championship.

In the Passerelle division, John Luis Borres stole an inbound pass and scored on a lay-up to give University of San Carlos a 44-42 win over Southwestern University-PHINMA, also in overtime. Agamemnon Allosada led USC with 12 points as Sebastian Versoza added eleven.

Jesu Siez led SWU-PHINMA with 17. In the other Passerelle division game, SHS-Ateneo de Cebu cruised past Don Bosco, 73-34. Michael Asoro and Rezaled Dacalos had 15 and 10 points, respectively for the Magis Eagles.

USC, SHS-Ateneo and UV now share the lead in the Passerelle division with identical 2-0 win-loss slates, followed by Don Bosco (1-1), SWU-PHINMA (0-3) and SMS-Boystown (0-3).
