USC crushes SHS-Ateneo in CESAFI futsal
CEBU, Philippines — The University of San Carlos fired an early warning shot to its rivals after trouncing defending champion Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu, 5-2 at the start of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) futsal tournament at the USC-Main gym yesterday.
The Carolinians have an old score to settle against the Ateneans, who edged them in last year’s finals.
With vengeance at the back of their minds, the USC girls delivered with finesse, bombarding Ateneo with four goals in the first half.
After Andrea Badinas broke the ice of the match, Jolina Colon punched back-to-back goals at the 15th and 18th before Marilyn Beras scored on the 19th for a commanding 4-0 USC lead at halftime.
Beras was also responsible for unloading USC’s last goal at the 29th.
Even though Ateneo’s Meagan Andrea Alforque and Marie Barba nailed two goals in succession at the 37th and 38th, it no longer mattered for USC as time was on its side.
In the other game, University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) made its debut a memorable one with a 2-0 drubbing of the University of San Jose-Recoletos.
Both squads went scoreless in the first half, but the USPF bets stepped up their game in the final frame, with Argen May Garcia and Kyza Colina knocking in goals at the 24th and 28th to flatten USJ-R. (FREEMAN)
