Alegria, Barili top brackets in Governor’s Cup hoop

CEBU, Philippines — Alegria and Barili topped their respective brackets via clean sweep to gain outright quarterfinal berths in the 2nd Cebu Governor's Cup Inter-Cities and Municipalities Under-21 Developmental Basketball Tournament.

After picking only one win last season, Alegria vaulted to the top of South Division Bracket 3 with a 5-0 record capped by an 82-71 beating of Ginatilan.

Patrik Devila pumped in 14 of his 18 points in the first half, then Christian Jay Garcia took over the scoring cudgels for Alegria in the remaining two quarters to neutralize Ginatilan's late game surge. Garcia paced Alegria with 21 points.

Despite the loss, Ginatilan still joined Alegria to the next round with a 4-1 slate.

Barili, on the other hand, prevailed over Dumanjug, 99-96, in a battle of unbeaten teams to cop the South Division Bracket 4 title with a clean 4-0 mark.

Charlie Sabanal showed the way for the Barili with 20 points followed by Lee Baybayonon with 15 markers.

With a 3-1 card, Dumanjug still advanced to the quarters as South B4 second seed.— EBV
