SWU dominates CESAFI volley

Caecent No-ot Magsumbol - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines – Southwestern University won three of the four titles at stake in the volleyball tournament of the 2015 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. yesterday at the University of San Carlos main gymnasium.

SWU Lady Cobras scored the biggest victory as they registered a rare double-grandslam in the history of CESAFI.

This is the second grandslam title by the SWU women’s after winning three-straight championship in 2009 to 2011.

The Lady Cobras won Game 2 to complete a sweep of their best-of-three championship series against University of San Jose-Recoletos in straight sets, 25-18, 25-20, 29-27.

Lady Cobras relied on the efforts from Renee Nathalie Colleen Gimeno, Janelle Cabahug, Floremel Rodriguez and Karen Derder for the historic win.

In the men’s side, the spiking Cobras also proved their might by snaring their second straight title by beating host team USC, 21-25,25-20, 25-18, 25-23 in Game 2.

Warriors' team captain Gavinito Yongco and Patrick Tanjay led USC’s charge to take the first set, but SWU bounced back in the ensuing set with tougher defense and powerful spikes.

SWU behind Alden Dave Cabaron, Rommel Pepito, Carl Alivio, Royet Varga, and libero Jewel Cabahug made sure there will no longer be Game 3 by winning the next two sets.

Just like their collegiate teams, SWU's girls also reclaimed the throne they had back in 2013 with another finals sweep against Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu, 25-13, 25-16 in Game 2.

Meanwhile, USJ-R boys squad also won the title with a Game 2 victory over USC.  (FREEMAN)
