USJ-R, SWU spikers stay unbeaten

Caecent No-ot Magsumbol - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines – Despite playing without one of its key players, the University of San Jose-Recoletos still made an impression, handing the University of San Carlos its first loss in secondary volleyball event of the 2014 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. season yesterday at the USC-Main gym.

USJ-R, which was without star center-blocker Daniella Alfeche who is still nursing from an ankle injury, bested the previously unbeaten USC in straight sets, 25-20, 25-23, to nail its third straight win in as many starts. USC, for its part, saw its four-game winning streak come to a sudden red stop.

USJ-R's coaching staff were clever enough in filling up the void left by Alfeche. Anna Aldave filled in Alfeche’s spot, rookie player Shaun Cabahug serves as the open hitter. The tandem worked well and brought heavy damage on the side of the Carolinians.

After losing in the first set, USC tried to forge a decider, but USJ-R’s had better offense and team effort in the second set to seal the deal.

Southwestern University, on the other hand, coasted to its fourth consecutive victory at the expense of the University of Cebu, 25-7, 25-12.

In the boys side, the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu slammed the Don Bosco Technology Center, 25-19, 25-20.

Meanwhile, in the lone women’s collegiate match, USC bounced back from its loss to SWU last week and vented its ire on the University of Southern Philippines Foundation, 25-22, 25-21, 25-18. (FREEMAN)
