Lagman moves into next round of Cebuana Lhuillier net

CEBU, Philippines - Jacob Lagman is the last Cebuano standing in the 4th Cebuana Lhuillier Men’s Open Tennis Championships after he upset eighth seed Roel Capangpangan at Baseline tennis courts yesterday.

Lagman, one of the three Junior Davis Cuppers seeing action in this men’s open action, felt bad having to kick away local veteran player Roy Tabotabo -6,6-2,6-3 to face Capangpangan in the second round.

Like his first assignment, Lagman lost the first set, but came back strong in the next two sets to fend off Capangpangan after two hours of action, 2-6,6-2,6-2.

During the first day, Lagman’s fellow Davis Cupper Jurence Mendoza stunned seeded no.11 player Antonio Sagansay.

However, Mendoza failed to duplicate Lagman’s winning formula with no less than defending champion Johnny Arcilla giving Mendoza some neat lessons in tennis via a lopsided 6-0, 6-2 decision.

Arcilla is set to face seeded no.5 Ronard Joven in the quarterfinal round today, while the young Lagman will take on one of Arcilla’s toughest opponents before, Joseph Victorino.

Victorino’s returned to action here by dismissing seeded no.2 Onyok Anasta, 6-2,2-6,6-3 before dismissing Rommel Openiano, 6-0,6-2. – (FREEMAN)
