Cebu City implements asynchronous classes

CEBU, Philippines — Cebu City will follow the Department of Education’s (DepEd) implementation of asynchronous classes or distance learning scheme today, April 15, and tomorrow.

DepEd-Cebu City division assistant superintendent Adolf Aguilar confirmed this to The Freeman as the said order is nationwide.

Cebu City Mayor Mike Rama has earlier announced that the city will implement a modified schedule of classes instead of suspending face-to-face classes amidst the increasing heat index. On the other hand, other towns and cities in the Province of Cebu have opted to suspend face-to-face classes.

For the city of Talisay, Mayor Samsam Gullas has announced that the suspension of face-to-face classes will be extended after his initial order expired yesterday.

“We will continue with the suspension of face to face classes and continue the modular type of class until the Governor (Gwendolyn Garcia) decides to lift the suspension,” said Gullas.

Mayor Gullas, through his Facebook page, also disclosed that he spoke with Talisay City College president Richel Bacaltos and was informed that they are already implementing a blended class schedule.

As for private schools in the said city, “the decision will be left up to their respective school administrators,” said Gullas.

Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Junard Chan, for his part, also extended its modular-type of learning based on DepEd-7's memo.

“Magpabiling modular ang klase sa mga estudyante sa Lunes ug Martes base sa migawas nga memo gikan sa DepEd Regional Office,” Mayor Chan said.

Based on DepEd Central Office’s announcement, they are implementing asynchronous classes/distance learning in all public schools from April 15 to 16, 2024 “in order to allow learners to complete pending assignments, projects, and other requirements as the end of school year is fast-approaching.”

Along with this, teaching and non-teaching personnel in all public schools are also not required to report to their respective stations.

However, activities organized by regional and schools division offices, such as Regional Athletic Association meets and other division or school level programs to be conducted on the mentioned dates may push through as scheduled.

Private schools, however, is not covered by the said advisory, but is given the option to implement the same.
