BOC: Private port to address demand for more berthing spaces

CEBU, Philippines — Acknowledging the great potential of a private port development in Talisay City to address the growing demand for berthing spaces for international vessels, officials of the Bureau of Customs in the Port of Cebu recently met with the top executive of Cebu South Harbor and Container Terminal Corporation (CSHCTC) to explore strategies to maximize the newly opened wharf.

Cebu Customs officials, led by District Collector Atty. Ricardo Uy Morales II, met with Johnny L. Ng, president and chief executive officer of CSHCT.

Morales said the 25-hectare private port in Talisay City will address the growing demand for berthing space for foreign vessels destined for Cebu. The new port facility has a total of six docking berths with a maximum draft of 8–11 meters to accommodate bulk carriers and container ships, complete with ro-ro ramps.

The port facility also has four Ship-to-Shore (STS) Gantry Cranes to facilitate container loading and unloading, two large warehouses for bulk materials and other cargo, and a wide-open space serving as the port’s container yard.

“With its strategic location and state-of-the-art facilities, the port facility serves as an alternative gateway for port users and shipping operators, alleviating congestion in the Cebu International Port and creating much-needed space for increased traffic and business opportunities,” Morales said.

"We are dedicated in ensuring that Cebu remains a thriving hub for trade and commerce. Our collaboration with Cebu South Harbor and Container Terminal Corporation will be a game-changer not only for Cebu but also for Visayas and Mindanao. With this development, we are establishing Cebu’s shining presence in the global market and paying homage to her title as Queen City of the South,” he added.

Meanwhile, Morales welcomes vice consul Yuki Otsuka of the Consulate General of Japan in Cebu. Otsuka engaged in fruitful discussions with Morales to further solidify the bonds of cooperation and goodwill between Japan and the Port of Cebu.

“His visit indicates another significant stride in our unwavering commitment to enhancing trade facilitation, ensuring border security, and nurturing our invaluable partnership with Japan. We eagerly anticipate ongoing collaboration and shared accomplishments,” Morales said. — (FREEMAN)
