CEBU, Philippines — Two girls, aged one and two, died in a fire at Sitio Along-on, Barangay Bulangsuran, Samboan, Cebu last Saturday.

Barangay Captain Romeo Bilagtanol said the children were alone inside the house when it was razed by fire.

The mother reportedly left the house to fetch water, while the father was out for work.

Parents Tita Bilonio and Junjie Trapila and their children were the only ones living in the house.

Their place is about seven kilometers away from the town proper.  The fire trucks were also left helpless, since the victim’s residence would need about a 200-meter walk from the barangay road.

Bilagtanol said an unattended gas lamp may have caused the fire, as there was no electricity in the house on Friday.

He also added that the nearest neighbors were unable to rescue the children because the fire already engulfed the house when they arrived.

Bilagtanol stated that the municipality provided one of the coffins, while another one is being made.

The barangay will also shoulder the children’s burial expenses.

The police have told The FREEMAN that their office and the fire department of the municipality have yet to receive an official report regarding the incident. Christele Isabela B. Basco(FREEMAN)
