CPDRC burns contrabands seized in greyhound ops

Le Phyllis F. Antojado-Orillaneda - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — Several contrabands seized from the inmates were burned and destroyed by the personnel of the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC) yesterday.

The items include 15 kilos of tobacco, 469 lighters, 476 cigarettes, 178 cellphones, among others.

The contrabands were confiscated during several mini greyhound and selective operations the CPDRC personnel had conducted since September.

CPDRC Warden Reynaldo Valmoria said some of the items were seized while others were surrendered by the inmates.

Included among the contrabands that were burned yesterday were ropes used by outsiders who have contacts of inmates inside the jail facility in sneaking contrabands through "bombing" or throwing it at the back portion of the jail facility.

"Daghan na kayo net nga among gibutang, surrounded na by net (ang whole CPDRC) kay usually mga ala una, alas dos sa kaadlawon ipanglabay,” Valmoria said.

Last September 12, the provincial jail management first destroyed contrabands they were able to confiscate from the inmates during their greyhound activities earlier this year.

On the same month, the Police Regional Office-7 has also conducted a greyhound operation where illegal drugs and paraphenalia were recovered from the cells.

After the operation, Valmoria said they continued to conduct "selective greyhound" operation based on tips they received and random inspection on cells for almost every week where they were able to recover some illegal items.

Based on the recent operation they had, the warden claimed there were no drugs or paraphernalia recovered.

"“So far, sa ako lang diri, ang drugs, nikuan gyud.  So far, 95 percent wala na, zero na.  Wala nay drugas even paraphernalia,” Valmoria said.

The warden believes that the inmates have started to behave properly but said they will still continue to have future greyhound operations. (FREEMAN)
