Intelligence traffic system dry run slated next month

Odessa O. Leyson - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — The new traffic system proposed by a California-based firm will have its test run in the second week of November.

The Intelligent Traffic System offers a non-contact apprehension of traffic violators in the City of Cebu.

City Councilor Jerry Guardo who sits as the chairman of the committee on environment, energy, transportation, communication and other utilities said after Leotek presented its technology of monitoring the streets, the city government allows them to start the test run by the second week of November.

The intersection along M.J, Cuenco Ave. will be the dry run area.

The firm will manage the traffic situation in the area to find out whether or not the system will work in the city.

Last Friday, representatives from Leotek met with Mayor Tomas Osmeña to discuss the details on how they will implement the intelligent traffic system.

Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras will be installed on the intersection.

“Lipay ra si mayor, they came all the way from Taiwan for the project showing their CCTV cameras, excited ra pud si mayor for the test run,” Guardo said.

The city government is geared towards tapping a private firm to address the traffic problem in the city.

Last September, Guardo along with the mayor and other city hall employees went to Taiwan for a sisterhood event and they noticed how the country handles traffic related concerns.

They were told that the country used Leotek technology.

There are no traffic enforcers seen on the streets because of the non-contact apprehension scheme.

Leotek was founded in Silicon Valley, California in 1992 and is known for global manufacturing of street, roadway, area and signal lighting products and solutions.

Guardo said the dry run has no cost to the city government.

He will sponsor a resolution asking the authority of the city council to allow the mayor to sign the Memorandum of Agreement with Leotek.

If the non-contact apprehension system will be successful, the city’s executive department will prepare the terms of reference for a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) with Leotek. (FREEMAN)
