AJ de la Torre, Gregg Rubio - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Governor Hilario Davide III is set to meet this morning officials of different independent power producers to generate supplies while waiting for the restoration of the main source in Leyte.

Officials of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) and independent power generators and distributors are attending the said meeting at the Capitol.

“Mangita ta paagi unsaon nila, how they can be of help,” Davide said.

Capitol information officer Ethel Natera said that the meeting would also aims to get the real picture of the power situation in Cebu directly from the power industry sector.

Natera added that this is to alleviate the situation in the meantime the problem from the power source in Leyte has to be solved.

Davide said that there are still towns and islands in northern without electricity after typhoon Yolanda hit Cebu last Friday.

In fact, the provincial government has purchased 12 new generator sets and sent it to the towns and cities that were greatly devastated by super typhoon Yolanda.

Provincial Legal Office chief, lawyer Orvi Ortega, said the purchase of 12 brand new 25KVA diesel-fed generator sets is part of the immediate response of the provincial government since reconnection of power and water supply for the northern towns is still a concern.

Ortega, who led the inspection of the new generator sets yesterday, said that apart from the lack of food, residents of the northern towns affected by the super typhoon are hoping that the restoration of their water supply would be prioritized.

Since the generation of water is run by electricity, Ortega said the provincial government decided to provide the generator sets to the City of Bogo and the towns of Daanbantayan, San Remigio, Medellin, Tabogon and the municipalities in the islands of Bantayan and Camotes.

Ortega clarified that all the three towns of Bantayan Island- Bantayan, Santa Fe and Madridejos- will be getting one generator set each as well as one each for the towns of San Francisco, Tudela, Poro and Pilar in Camotes Island.

The generator sets were procured using the calamity fund of the provincial government and according to Ortega, based on the provision of Republic Act 9184, no bidding is needed for the emergency cases such as this and purchase of such items can be made under a negotiated procurement or when the government body can directly negotiate a contract with a potential supplier.

Ortega said they canvassed on the lowest price from a number of generator set suppliers and Philmon Hardware had the most affordable price at P290,000 each or P3,480,000 for all 12 generator sets. — (FREEMAN)
