CEBU, Philippines - Cebu sixth district Rep. Luis Gabriel Quisumbing yesterday said he is open to the proposal to make Mandaue City a lone congressional district.
Quisumbing yesterday said he has always been in favor of this saying the city has been qualified to become a lone district since 1992 and wonders why no one has worked for this.
Though such a move will entail a lot of legal impediments as it will leave the towns of Cordova and Consolacion isolated, he said he is open to any proposals on how to resolve the issue.
Former six district representative Nerissa Soon-Ruiz said she has filed such a bill in 2004 aiming to separate Mandaue from Lapu-Lapu City, Cordova and Consolacion and refiled it in 2007.
With the population now increasing she hopes that Cebu will now have 11 to 12 congressional districts.
“Ang maayo aning buhaton ‘ron nga mairog ang boundaries tungod sa kadako na sa population,” she said.
She said that both Consolacion and Cordova might be merged with the towns of Liloan and Compostela to compose one district to allow Mandaue City to become a lone district.
Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes said it has been his longing for the city to become a lone district, since the P70 million Priority Development Assistance Fund will mean more classrooms and infrastructure projects for the city.
“Daghan na kaayo kong bawod gi-agian aron lang dyud nga mahimong lone district ang Mandaue, apan naa ra dyud ning tanan sa kamot sa kongresista,” Cortes said.(FREEMAN)
