1 dead, 1 injured road mishaps in Danao, Asturias

- Niña G. Sumacot-Abenoja - The Philippine Star

CEBU, Philippines - A man met his untimely death in a road accident in Danao City while two houses were damaged in a separate incident in Asturias town last Saturday.

In the Danao incident, Edilto Hermoso, 31, died after a multicab hit the motorcycle he was riding. Hermoso was thrown off the motorcycle and hit his head on the pavement. He was wearing a helmet at that time, but still sustained head injuries.

Hermoso’s companion, Novie Bonjoc, 27, the one driving the motorcycle, also sustained injuries.

The incident happened around 6 a.m. in Barangay Poblacion when the victims were traversing Mabini Street heading south. Suddenly, a dark green Suzuki multicab pick-up, which was heading the opposite direction, turned left and hit the motorcycle.

Bonjoc lost control of the motorcycle and the two victims were thrown off the vehicle. The multicab sped off.

The two victims were brought to the hospital, but Hermoso did not make it there alive.

Investigation is ongoing to identify the driver of the multicab.

In another incident in Asturias town, a military truck hit two houses when the driver dozed off while behind the wheel past 4 a.m. last Saturday.

Private First Class Antonio Fernandez was driving an M35 Hercules military truck (SFN 770) on the way back to the headquarters of the 78th Infantry Battalion in the neighboring town of Balamban when he suddenly dozed off as he was passing through Barangay Looc Norte in Asturias.

Insp. Danillo Santillan, chief of Asturias Police, said Fernandez tried to step on the breaks, but it was too late. The vehicle grazed two houses made of light materials situated right beside the road.

Santillan said damage was minimal and no one was hurt in the incident. Fernandez also subsequently settled the matter with the house owners, Vicente Gasta and Evangeline Agang.

Fernandez’ colleagues in the 78th IB Engineering Brigade also assisted in fixing the damage on the two houses.

Santillan said Fernandez was among those driving the trucks since early dawn.

“Sayo pa kaayo sa buntag nagbalik-balik kuha sa ilang tropa from Balamban to Danao City Port off for Samar,” Santillan said. — (FREEMAN)
