Moonwalk postponed due to bad weather

CEBU, Philippines - The 8th annual “Moonwalk: A Walk for Breast Cancer Awareness” initiated by the Eduardo J. Aboitiz Cancer Center (EJACC) of the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation, Inc. (RAFI) was postponed yesterday afternoon due to poor weather.

Ronald delos Reyes, program coordinator of EJACC announced that the annual walk for a cause that was scheduled for Oct. 12 was canceled and moved to another date due to storm Ramon.

Participants will be informed of the final date as soon as possible, delos Reyes said.

An estimated of 3,000 individuals have already signified their intention to join the “moonwalk” in observance of October as the Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

It is a unique advocacy campaign held every full moon of October aimed at promoting the importance of observing monthly breast self-examination for women aged 20 and beyond.

Delos Reyes said the activity is also meant to get more people to be aware of the importance of early cancer detection and prevention.

Also, RAFI means it as a tribute to the victims and survivors of breast cancer.

According to the Cebu population-based Cancer Registry of RAFI, breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among Cebuano women.

From 1993 to 2007, the EJACC recorded a total of 3,005 breast cancer cases in Metro Cebu.

The EJACC found a continuous increase of breast cancer incidence in Metro Cebu over the past 10 years, caused by lifestyle and health-related factors. – (FREEMAN)
