Boy, 3, dies of freak accident

CEBU, Philippines - A three-year-old boy died of a freak accident when a volleyball player bumped him while crossing the court in Sitio Lower Purok 8, Barangay Camputhaw Saturday afternoon.

Jenniel Baylosis Zubiri died on the way to the hospital after hitting his head on the pavement when Renante Bustamante Taborada, 19, accidentally bumped him while playing volleyball.

The boy suddenly crossed the volleyball court just as Taborada was stepping backward to strike the ball.

Taborada did not see the boy crossing behind him.

Because of the impact, the boy fell down on his head resulting to serious injury causing his death. Taborada voluntarily surrendered to the responding barangay tanods while the parents of the victim tried to save their boy by rushing him to the hospital.

Taborada is currently detained at the homicide section of the Cebu City Police Office while a criminal complaint for reckless imprudence resulting to homicide is being prepared against him.

The police are also evaluating whether criminal complaints will be filed against the child’s parents for negligence. — (FREEMAN)
