Cleanup of coasts and rivers on March 19

- Jessica Ann R. Pareja -

CEBU, Philippines - The Cebu Coastline Management Board in cooperation with the City River Management Council will hold the 22nd coastal and 18th urban clean up on March 19, to be participated in by all urban barangays and other sector.

The activity is expected to gather thousands of volunteers who will promote the importance of cleanliness for the health and welfare of the constituents.

The joint clean up of rivers, coastlines and all the corners of the participating barangays seeks to send a message to the public that cleanliness can be achieved if everyone will do his part.

The team for this activity is “Kalikupan atong limpyuhan aron mabulahan sa gasa sa kahitas-an.”

Councilor Eduardo Rama, chairman of the committee on public services, said that the city’s target now is changing the behavior of the residents so they will throw their garbage only in proper places.

He said that they are also teaching people not to depend too much on the City Government to maintain cleanliness in their areas.

Councilor Nida Cabrera said that over the years, they are starting to see improvements in the barangays.

More barangays are now participating in the clean-up efforts while some areas where there used to be mountains of garbage along the roads are now clear of garbage.

Rama said they tapped the barangay tanods to police their respective areas against residents who violate environmental laws like proper garbage disposal.

They will help the City Environmental Sanitation and Enforcement Team and the Barangay Environment Officers in enforcing the laws.

The clean-up activity this Saturday is expected to collect over 150 tons of garbage apart from the regular collection of the Department of Public Services. (FREEMAN)
