Laglag Barya man arrested

CEBU, Philippines – A 22-year-old alleged member of Laglag Barya Gang was arrested for taking away the wallet of a jeepney passenger along N. Bacalso Avenue, Cebu City yesterday morning.

Jason Alvarez, a resident of Tabunok, Talisay City, was apprehended by no less than his victim, identified as Evans Vergara, 62, of Tabada, Barangay Mambaling.

PO3 Diosdado Andales of Mambaling Police Station said Vergara and three other men boarded a jeepney bound for Barangay Pardo around 12 p.m. One of the men was later identified as the suspect.

Upon reaching Barangay San Nicolas, one of the men dropped coins on the jeepney's floor.

The one who was sitting beside Vergara reportedly tried moving the victim's feet through his feet, pretending to look for the coins.

Andales said Alvarez, who was at the other side of the victim, then took the latter's wallet, which contained P500.

The suspect immediately disembarked from the jeepney. However, the victim, who noticed that his wallet was taken, was able to grab the arm of Alvarez.

The cohorts of Alvarez fled while Vergara sought assistance from barangay tanods, who then turned over the suspect to the Mambaling police.

A charge for theft will be filed against Alvarez, who is now detained at the police station. (FREEMAN)
