2 Talisay residents succumb to dengue

CEBU, Philippines – Two more Talisay City residents have died from the dengue disease last Sunday in separate private hospitals in Cebu City.

Tanke barangay chief Perla Cabanes confirmed that German Menoso, 20, single, of sitio San Rafael succumbed to complications of the dengue disease.

The other victim is two-year-old Guada Marie Nahine of Bliss

Subdivision, barangay Lawaan 3, who is a son of a city hall employee, said Lawaan 3 barangay chief Delia Ybanez. The child died last Sunday afternoon, she said.

Another Talisay resident, Bebot Desipulo, 48, from barangay Tanke, as of yesterday was being treated at Chong Hua Hospital in Cebu City, City Councilor Semy Cabuenas said.

He said there are also other patients in barangay Lagtang who are suffering from the same disease.

Public Information Officer Arturo Bas said the city's anti-dengue task force is now being sent to areas with reports of dengue cases to do mist-blowing activities.

The city has since adapted the mist blowing procedure, which unlike the traditional fumigation, uses water-based and environment-friendly substance to kill mosquitoes.

The Regional Epidemiology Surveillance Unit (RESU) of the Department of Health has put Talisay on the third rank in its list of places having high dengue cases in the entire province.

Since January of this year, at least 148 persons have been recorded to have been hit by the disease. Four of them have died.

While this developed, the city council yesterday approved a proposed resolution urgently requesting all rural health units, barangay councils, sangguniang kabataan councils, Department of Education supervisors "to help implement, promote and intensify" clean-up drives and the 4:00 o'clock habit "to prevent and suppress the sudden widespread of dengue.

Proposed Resolution No. 2010-4-1, which was authored by Councilor Richard Aznar, who is chairman on council committee on Health, was unanimously approved by the council in yesterday's regular session. (FREEMAN)
