Archdiocese submits docs to support cause of Pedro Calungsod's sainthood

The Cebu Archdiocese has already sent to Vatican documents about a miracle to support the cause for Blessed Pedro Calungsod's sainthood, Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal said.

"We already finished documenting a miracle on a woman able to survive a terminal illness by being prayed over with the intercession of Blessed Pedro Calungsod. We already sent them to Rome and we are waiting results from the Vatican on the matter," he added.

Vidal said the woman is not from here, but worked here. However, he didn't divulge the name of said woman.

The Congregation for the Causes of Saints is expected to evaluate the documents that were submitted about the young Visayan martyr.

Pedro Calungsod was a young native of the Visayas region. He was one of the boy catechists who went with Padre Diego Luis de San Vitores and other Spanish Jesuit missionaries from the Philippines to the Ladrones Islands in the western Pacific in 1668 to evangelize the Chamorros.

Padre Diego Luis de San Vitores was beatified in 1985. It was his beatification that brought the memory of Pedro Calungsod to our day.

It was on March 5, 2000 when the late Pope John Paul II beatified Pedro Calungsod at Saint Peter's Square in Rome. - Jasmin R. Uy
