Carmen barangay execs oppose landfill

Barangay officials of Dawis Sur, Carmen town strongly opposed the move of the provincial government to build a sanitary landfill in the barangay, citing its possible threat to the health of the residents.

Dawis Sur barangay captain Mark Christian Lao told The Freeman that the proposal to build a sanitary landfill was discussed by the barangay council during its regular session last month.

Governor Gwendolyn Garcia had said during the Provincial Development Council meeting last month that aside from barangay Maslog in Danao City, barangay Dawis Dur in Carmen is also the possible site for the proposed landfill.

Garcia's move was to provide solution to the problem among local government units in complying with the Solid Waste Management Law.

Barangay Dawis Sur officials have been united in opposing the proposed project. "We the barangay officials strongly condemn and disagree with the proposed landfill," the council resolution said, citing the need to protect the environment and the residents' health. - Jose P. Sollano
