Lawaan residents say no to memorial park project

-
The barangay council of Lawaan I of Talisay City is opposed to the establishment of a memorial park in their barangay following complaints filed by constituents.

Last February 19, the barangay Lawaan I council, during its regular session, approved unanimously a resolution "opposing the proposed Pope John Paul II Memorial Park-Garden of Peace."

The decision of the council was based on the complaints of hundreds of residents in sitio Molila, who during the first public hearing expressed opposition to the said proposal.

The residents, according to barangay captain Ronald Lastimosa, do not want another memorial park in their place. This proposed memorial park would stand, if approved, next to the Cebu South Memorial Garden. "Hapit tanan di ganahan sa maong project," said Lastimosa.

"There are some complaint letters endorsed by the people living nearby with their corresponding signatures showing opposition to the proposed memorial park," the barangay resolution read.

However, Lastimosa said that the barangay could not do anything if the developer would be issued an Environmental Compliance Certificate by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. - Liv G. Campo
