Keeping Cool in a Traffic Jam

Carlo Rivera - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - You can never escape from certain things in life: death, taxes and, if you're living in a big city, being caught in a traffic jam is not an uncommon situation. Indeed, traffic jams are something very hard to avoid. And it gets in your nerves even by just thinking about it.

Of course, images of hot, glaring days and a dusty road congested with an endless centipede of vehicles are depressing. But you can always find interesting things to do to make your time in the traffic less stressful. Certain things give good entertainment, or idle time can be used for something really productive.

If you're a woman, use the time to check on yourself, your dress, your makeup. But, of course, don't do it aboard public transportation. In your car, take out your makeup kit and start from the beginning; re-apply foundation, eye liner, mascara, lipstick and blush on. The activity doesn't only direct your mind to yourself, it can also leave you looking better and feeling good.

Being stuck in traffic is also an opportunity to check on your phone for messages. Likewise, you can send messages, too. For entertainment, you can text and receive jokes and the latest gossips to and from friends; or, simply, play games on your phone. If it's possible, go online and get reacquainted with long lost friends over the social media.

Okay, it may not always be advisable or safe to use gadgets aboard public transportation. In that case, better start a conversation with the old lady sitting next to you. She is probably just as uneasy. A friendly talk is good diversion for both of you. Exchange household tips and recipes.

Even such trivial matters as the latest fashion and hairstyle, the newest teen stars, the latest celebrity weddings and scandals can help preclude the onset of stress. On the other hand, you can use the time to ponder on or figure out certain issues in your life. It's possible to shut yourself off from the surrounding noise and sights and be alone with yourself.

One more thing, when boredom begins to creep in, veer your attention to the cars around. Try exercising your memorization skills by taking note of the various plate numbers, and see if you can remember them correctly. Do this just for the fun of it. For all you know, it's good exercise for your brain!

But first and foremost, try your best not be caught in traffic. Leave early, listen to traffic reports on the radio and TV, or take an alternative route if need be. A little planning can help a lot.
