Ryan Agoncillo got his birthday wish

- Ricky L. Calderon - The Freeman

Alfred Vargas said he was already thinking of quitting showbiz and going to law school. Yes, he was enjoying being in showbiz but it seemed his career was going nowhere. It was a good thing he was offered by Robbie Tan of Seiko Films the film project “Bridal Shower”, directed by Jeffrey Jeturian.

That was Alfred’s most daring project that time (he played the macho dancer lover of Cherry Pie Picache in the said comedy flick) and for his performance, Alfred won the Best Breakthrough Performance by an Actor Award from the newly formed Golden Screen Awards of the Entertainment Press Society. His winning the award (his very first acting trophy) made Alfred change his mind.

“I was already thinking of going to law school that time. But when I won the award, I told myself ‘Aba, may talent din naman pala ako sa acting kahit konti.’ The award was a big boost for me and because I deferred of my plan to study law,” said Alfred who is running for the lone post as congressman for the 5th district of Quezon City. “After I won, many projects came my way. Hindi na ako nawalan ng trabaho. I got good breaks.”

At the 10th Golden Screen Awards held last April 29, Alfred won the Best Actor Award (Drama Category) for “Supremo” in tie with iconic actor Eddie Garcia (who was brilliant in “Bwakaw”). “It was a memorable night for him and (Tito Eddie as well) since they were also declared Dekada Awardees by the Golden Screen Awards.

“It was my second trophy from the Golden Screen Awards and I didn’t know that I was up for a Dekada Award. Kasi since this is the tenth year of the Golden Screen Awards, they decided to give a Dekada Award to those who have won two or more Golden Screen Awards trophies. It was a pleasant surprise tapos kasabay ko pang nanalo si Tito Eddie so talagang memorable,” said the award-winning actor.

After the elections, Alfred and his production team are set to plan their next project, something probably not as grand as “Supremo” but still a project that would be an interesting watch. “Gusto namin gumawa ng movie na magugustuhan nang maraming tao and would still be appreciated ten or 20 years from now.”

Alfred sacrificed his showbiz career when he entered politics three years ago but he has no regrets. “I really wanted to be of service to the people,” added the actor who disputes claims that he was backing out of the race as representative for the 5th district of Quezon City. “But I won’t turn my back on showbiz kasi it was because of showbiz that took me where I am now. Siguro limited time lang ang maibibigay ko sa showbiz pero di ko naman ito tatalikuran,” Alfred said.

Something special awaits the regular viewers of “Bubble Gang” tonight (May 10) as Eat Bulaga host Ryan Agoncillo tests his comic skills opposite the amazing cast members of “Bubble Gang.”

The Kapuso host had been saying that he wants to have his chance of being a guest in the longest-running gag show on Philippine TV. When he marked his birthday last April 10, Ryan reiterated his wish to guest in Bubble Gang.  So to grant his wish, Bubble Gang heeded his call and there was Ryan taping his first ever guest stint on the top-rating Kapuso gag show.

Joining Ryan and the BG barkada are Sef Cadayona, Chariz Solomon, Mikael Daez, and  Carla Abellana.

Aside from the gags and spoofs (they are doing a spoof on the Ariel commercial featuring Kris Aquino and her sister Ballsy), guaranteed to make the viewers laugh are their gags on  Bisperas ng Eleksyon at Aling Mary, which is a sketch on a lady who shows the true character of a government employee.

Another story is Gym Believe, about the different types of people who go to the gym. Also not to be missed are the two stories on friends via Pamintang Durog at Recorded Away.

Iza Calzado supports the senatorial bid of Risa Hontiveros who is running under Team Pinoy.

“Kaisa ako ni Ate Risa sa kanyang laban kontra sa katiwalian at sa kanyang pakikipaglaban para sa mga kababaihan. I admire Risa’s advocacies - they just affirm her being a beautiful, intelligent and principled person. Sabi niya, kung may gaganap daw sa lifestory niya, gusto niya ako ang gumanap. I would be honored to act and live like Ate Risa... but I hope she would be given the chance to accomplish and achieve more! Kaya suportahan po natin sya sa Senado!,” said the award-winning actress in her Facebook post.

Aside from Risa, the actress is also throwing her support to reelectionist Senator Gringo Honasan. In fact, at the presscon given by Mother Lily Monteverde for Sen. Honasan last Tuesday, the press had the chance to hear Iza speak about her support for the former PMA cadet and hero of the 1986 EDSA Revolution. Iza’s gesture made the senator cry. Iza looks up to Sen. Honasan as a father and says her support is more on the personal side.

Incidentally, Iza has a new movie. She attended the story conference and script reading for “Kuwentong Barbero” to be directed by Jun Lana (Golden Screen Awards best director winner for “Bwakaw”). The movie topbills Ms. Eugene Domingo and also features award-winning young actor Edgar Allan Guzman.
