Ayala Center Cebu’s ‘Bravo Filipino’ features The Himig Collection

-

The Ayala group of companies begins 2008 with a celebration of Philippine talent through Bravo Filipino. Set to be a tribute to local artists in the fields of art, music, and fashion, the event’s chief attractions include a concert featuring Ryan Cayabyab and an exhibit showcasing the Himig Collection.

The Himig Collection, Filipinas Heritage Library’s (FHL) collection of Philippine phonograph records, is the main source of inspiration for this project.  In 2006, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts permanently loaned to FHL its collection of 963 vintage Original Pilipino Music (OPM) records. Today, FHL’s Himig Collection has expanded to over 2,000 records, including some limited edition OPM records from the 1950s and 1960s.

Aside from offering an extensive assortment of Philippine songs, the Himig Collection also serves as a collection of album cover art. The artistic value of the collection’s record sleeves are shown through the different styles and designs used in the album covers, which reflect the social realities and aesthetic tastes of the time to which they belong.

The Filipinas Heritage Library aims to promote wider appreciation of our local music traditions by making these prized records readily available to the public for both research and recreational purposes.

View the Himig Collection at Paseo Marina on April 21 to 27, 2008 and enjoy a night of OPM songs with Ryan Cayabyab on April 25, 2007 at 6PM.  For more details, call 232-5342 local 324.
