A Driver’s Resolution

STANDING START - Lord Seno - The Freeman

Whatever your New Year’s resolutions may be, it should be wise to include your everyday “grocery getter” and make yourself a better car owner.  Here is my list of the top five New Year’s Resolutions for Every Car Owner.

1. Don’t Neglect Car Maintenance

If you were lax about making regular maintenance appointments for your vehicle in 2019, your first new year’s resolution should be to mark the calendar! Yes, I know keeping up with car maintenance can be costly, but bigger problems can arise without proper maintenance.

The most important car maintenance you will need to ear mark with this year are the oil changes, tire checks, brake pads, and your car’s air filters.

2. Learn To Do Basic Maintenance Yourself

If you’re tired of scheduling appointments and spending so much on maintenance, why not do do-it-yourself?  While there are some maintenance tasks that should be done by a mechanic, there are simple tasks you can do by yourself to keep your car maintained this year.

Start with something small, like learning to replace your windshield wipers. It usually needs to be done once a year and is important for road safety. It’s an easy goal for the New Year to accomplish quickly.  Don’t forget to master the other essential checks like oil, tire pressure, intake air filter, coolant and your car’s battery. These are great ways to save you money this year and learn something new!

3. Keep Your Car Clean

This is probably a common thing, but for the rest of us it is a daily challenge. Learn to de-clutter and maintain the cleanliness.  Remove everything from your car that you do not need and organize the things that are in your car.  A lot of car interior organizers are available in the net at reasonable prices.  Throw away those gas receipts, candy wrappers and parking stubs.

Give your car a good clean after you’ve organized it and schedule a weekly cleaning to maintain the cleanliness.

4. End Distracted Driving

A lot of road accidents in the Philippines and all over the world are attributed to distracted driving.  Make it a goal for 2020 not to add to these distracted driving statistics, but to make them smaller.  Distracted driving is an epidemic that is completely preventable. I know, it’s hard when traffic is barely moving.  Just put down the phone and pay attention to driving.

5. Be Courteous To Other Drivers

We all know driving can be frustrating especially with traffic jams, road construction, kamote riders , erring PU drivers and novice ones. It’s easy to let that get to you causing road rage and potentially accidents. Make it a new year’s resolution to be patient with the people you share the road with.

Happy New Year!
