British embassy opens Chevening scholarship to young visionaries

The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - The British Embassy is calling on future leaders in Cebu as it announces the opening of the UK government’s Chevening scholarship for academic year 2016-2017.

“It is for people with strong academic backgrounds and the ability and plans to be leaders who can make a difference,” the embassy said in a statement to the media yesterday. “The scholarship is aimed at mid-career professionals and provides full financial support to study for a Master’s degree at any of the UK’s leading universities.”

British Ambassador Asif Ahmad said they want a “diverse group of scholars” so they are urging visionaries in Cebu to apply for the scholarship.

“It is not only about education, it is about helping emerging leaders develop the skills and networks needed to make positive change in their home country,” Ahmad said.

The British Embassy is aiming to send up to 30 Chevening scholars next year to study a wide range of subjects – including law, human rights, economics, climate change, health, development and energy, among others. Applicants can choose what they want to study.

Applications for Chevening scholarship for AY 2016-2017 must be submitted online through chevening.org between August 3 and November 3, 2015.

The scholarship program seeks to invest in future Filipino leaders as part of UK’s strong bilateral relations with the Philippines. It is also an investment to develop the next group of global leaders.

Chevening is funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and partner organizations.

Ahmad said their partnership with the private sector has allowed them to maximize opportunities in the Philippines. Among their partners include BPI, GlaxoSmithKline Philippines, Megaworld Corp. and Shell Philippines. — Carlo S. Lorenciana (FREEMAN)
