SM City switches off lights for Earth Hour

-

CEBU, Philippines - SM City Cebu joined the rest of the Cebu community as it switches off its lights for Earth Hour on March 31.

The ceremonial switch off was held at the Northwing Atrium with Cebu City Councilor Margot Osmeña, former city councilor and environmentalist Engr.Nestor Archival, Vince Cinches, environmental lawyer Atty.Tara Rama, Cebu City environmental officer William Artajo, and the General Manager of Radisson Blu Hotel Cebu & Vice President of Carlson Rezidor in Asia Pacific Mr. Lyle Lewis.

In cooperation with the Department of Energy and the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF), the SM City Cebu joins the world’s largest environmental campaign to foster awareness on the need to respond to the global issue of climate change. This international celebration calls on the entire community to shut off their non-essential lighting for one hour.

The program opened with a song number from the Close to Nature Choir followed by speeches from esteemed guests. “It is important that we respect Mother Earth, and I admire SM that they are united with us this evening in the celebration of Earth Hour,” said Hon.Osmena during her speech.

“For years, SM Supermalls has internalized the ethic of sustainable business and has operated a diligent and dedicated environmental program focusing on efficient business, environmental stewardship, and awareness. All of our newest SM Supermalls are designed with a central focus on sustainable design to promote energy and resource efficiency; providing the best for our patrons while minimizing out environmental impact,” said SM City Cebu Assistant Mall Manager Kristine Seno during her welcome message.

At exactly 8:30 p.m., the Northwing dimmed its lights for 50% including logo of SM City Cebu in the mall façade, billboard, lights in the hallways, as well as tenants signage in the Northwing. The event was capped with the signing of the commitment wall and a performance from the drumbeaters, Lupon Anduyo.

Guests were then ushered to Radisson Blu Hotel where the ceremonial switching on of lights was held at 9:30 p.m. (FREEMAN)
