CEBU, Philippines - It’s the year 2011 and with the rains greetings the first few days of the year, we know that our roads will also change state as new potholes will emerge and the old ones will grow bigger in size.
Since we’ve been heading to the airport and back the past few days and at different times, we have noticed the bad condition of the roads in Mandaue City particularly in front of the hospital.
There are also potholes on the road at the foot of the Marcelo Fernan Bridge and there are still the children, who are begging at the intersection.
It’s a New Year, but the concerns are similar. We do hope that something will be done soon to make our lives better.

A reader commented on what we wrote last week about government vehicles that have been operating at night without the proper lights.
He said, “how about the garbage trucks that do not have taillights and headlights as well?”
“We haven’t come across any report of an accident yet, but I’m sure they are waiting for one before they will take action,” the reader said.
We have long been writing about such inadequacies of the garbage trucks, but as always the government officials seem to be waiting for a major mishap before taking action.
Unfortunately, being proactive is not very common among the leaders that have been elected into office.

This year, we hope that the proposed Metro Cebu Traffic Authority would become a reality.
Our local officials have to admit that the traffic situation in nearby areas would affect your place and unless a super body is on top of the situation, it would be difficult to coordinate.
With the coming Sinulog celebration, not only the traffic flow in Cebu City would be affected, but also that of Mandaue City and Talisay City.
The poor traffic situation in towns like Consolacion and Minglanilla would affect the business establishments in the city as the workers and the products cannot make it on time.
Traffic policies made in each local government unit must be done in coordination with others like the imposition of trucks bans so that businesses can come up with the proper schedule of the deployment of their vehicles.
It is about time for Cebu to do this. We can’t wait for another year if we want our place to really grow.
Our politicians have to set aside whatever makes them hate each other for the good of the Cebuanos and Cebu. Come to think of it, these politicians, who are always squabbling, are not really competing for the same votes during the elections.
