Dwayne Johnson confirms 3rd 'Moana' film in development

MANILA, Philippines — Disney isn't done yet with its favorite island girl as it prepares for another "Moana" movie.
Franchise star Dwayne Johnson, who voiced Maui in the first two films, confirmed the development while promoting the upcoming live-action remake of the first film in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
"Yes, we have talked about 'Moana 3,' yes," Johnson said. "But first, live-action 'Moana,' we'll let that come out first. We have [the] amazing Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller, who have been our writers … they will pen 'Moana 3.'"
Bush wrote the screenplay for the two animated films and the upcoming live-action remake while Miller joined him for the latter and the animated sequel.

While plot details for the supposed third movie aren't available yet, Johnson and the titular character's voice actress Auli'i Cravalho can be expected to return.
The first "Moana" from 2016 was a massive success for Disney especially when it began streaming on the studio's own platform Disney+.
An animated series was packaged instead into a theatrical sequel, which earned even more than its predecessor at the 2024 global box office.
Johnson reprises his role as Maui in the live-action remake coming out next week opposite newcomer Catherine Laga'aia as Moana.
