Pinoy kids win big in Math Olympiad

MANILA, Philippines - Filipino kids have affirmed their ability to excel in mathematics when all 15 participants brought home three gold, 20 silver and four bronze medals at the recently concluded ‘CMA Mental Arithmetic International Olympiad 2014’ at Republic Polytechnic in Singapore. Three of the 15 Filipino participants in the Math olympiad held last May 25 -- Samuelle John Guillarte of CMA Ortigas, Markus Gabrielle Salvador of CMA Ortigas and Ian Richmon Manabat of CMA Binondo -- aced their categories and won gold medals. Guillarte won gold in the Abacus arithmetic Grade 8 level; Manabat in the Abacus arithmetic Grade 12 level; and Salvador in Mental Arithmetic Grade 10 level. Winning silver medals were Ian Richmon Manabat, Alessandra Gabriel Valencia, Anne Gabrielle Rosaldo, Dion Yuri Cabote, Dylan Douglas Barinaga, Iannah Summer Sy, K Rafon, Mark Christoffer Moya, Uoreq Sajor Dator, Lendell John Chan, Feliz Anne Ysabelle Rayos, and Jantzen Kyron Ang. Bronze winners were Samuel John Guillarte, Markus Salvador, Lendell John Chan and Tea Allesandra Abastillas. CMA Philippines also won two 4th Place and one 5th Place in the Olympiad which was participated by a more than 1,000 kids from different Asian countries including Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, India and the Philippines who went through exercises that challenged their mathematical skills and familiarity with mental abacus arithmetic.
