2017 CVIRAA Meet; Niños pad gold medal haul to 99

CEBU, Philippines - Perennial champion Cebu City Niños maintained a good showing as they now have 99 gold, 49 silver and 21 bronze medals in Day 6 of the 2017 Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (CVIRAA) Meet played mainly at the Doring Mendiola Sr. Sports Complex in Naga City south of Cebu.

The Niños went unassailably ahead after seizing 22 gold, five silver and eight bronze medals in the final day of the swimming event.

Bohol is at far second with its 19 golds, 22 silvers and 15 bronzes followed by Mandaue City with its 18-24-30 gold-silver-bronze medals. Tagbilaran City occupied the fourth spot with 16-12-15 and Lapu-Lapu City at fifth with 15-27-23 medal tally.

Karen May Indaya led Cebu City tankers charge with her five golds, while the secondary girls squad grabbed two gold medals in the relay events.

Other swimmers who delivered golds for Cebu City in the pool were Yuan Chiongbian, Rein Ezabella Villano, Justine Reign Garrido, Luke Santos, Marielle Estreba, and Lindsay Gonzales.

Over at the track oval, Samantha Limos reigned supreme in the secondary girls 200m run with a time of 25.54.

 University of San Carlos’ Mary Joy Loberanis, for her part, bounced back by winning the 800m run in 2 minutes and 24 seconds. She defeated Bohol’s Rosemarie Espana who registered 2:29. Joan Alinsunod of Naga settled for the bronze with her 2:31 clocking. 

John Marvin Rafols and Seth Abram Pilapil also both got their second gold yesterday. Rafols dominated the triple jump after clearing 14.08m, while Pilapil came out the fastest in the boys 200m run with a time of 22:88.

Cebu City jins Christine Villasor and Nathan Clemen delivered two golds in the elementary and secondary division.  Niños collected a total of 11 gilts in taekwondo.

Archer Khalyn Alyx Abella, for her part, was too hot to handle after ruling the 30, 40 and 50m round battle as teammate Lloyd Apawan won the 30 and 40m gold in the secondary division.

John Vincent Lirazan handed a gold for Cebu City in the solo arnis baston, while Lyndie Marie Darlo and Leigh Ericka Villanueva posted a 1-2 in table tennis. (FREEMAN)
